Review of Some Melodious Sonnet by Jennifer Q. Hunt

Some Melodious Sonnet by Jennifer Q. Hunt is another one of her beautifully written Christian historical fiction books with romance. This one takes place in the 1830s in what is now northwest Georgia but at the time was Cherokee land.

The story centers around the Christian missionaries to the Cherokees and their work to keep the state of Georgia from claiming their land.

After attending finishing school, Cairstine Mackay moves to help her brother at her father’s mercantile store in the Cherokee lands and soon meets Jeremiah Harrison, who she clashes with every time they see one another.

Jeremiah has moved there to help with the legal aspects of the missionaries and Cherokees and is awaiting the arrival of his bride to be, a recent widow.

In true Hunt fashion, Jennifer takes this simple sounding story and makes every moment count with twists and turns, emotional ups and downs, peril, and realistic Christian characters who grapple with how to handle their situations in a Christlike manner. There are also many non Christian characters who exemplify the temptations of the world, though nothing sordid is detailed. This sets up a contrast of Christians living a faithful life among non-Christians and also realistically shows how Christians are called to love and represent Christ even to those who are our enemies.

This is the first book in a new series and it’s outstanding. Like her other books it drew me into the story while challenging my faith and teaching me about a part of history I wasn’t familiar with. I highly recommend it.

Read the blurb:

Torn between honor and love, they will be forced to make the most agonizing decision of their lives.

Sent to assist missionaries to the Cherokee Nation in Georgia, Jeremiah Harrison eagerly puts his legal training to use for a cause he believes in. While he awaits the arrival of the widow he has promised to marry, he dedicates himself to learning the language and preparing a home. But his defense of the missionaries draws the attention of the governor, and Jeremiah is launched into a fierce legal battle that may determine the Cherokees’ destiny—and his own.

Rather than marry a wealthy man she cannot respect, Cairstine Mackay has chosen the difficulties of pioneer life in the north Georgia hills. Employed at her brother’s mercantile, she finds purpose in guiding her young stepsister and aiding the missionaries at New Echota. Tensions flare between her and newcomer Jeremiah Harrison, but when tragedy strikes, he steps in to help where her father and brother will not. Then Jeremiah is unexpectedly the one in need, and Cairstine discovers that seeking his best interests will devastate her own heart.

Based on the true story of the missionaries’ fight against the Cherokee removal, Some Melodious Sonnet is Christian historical fiction that weaves together biblical values, historical intrigue, and a gentle love story.
