The Making of Not Quite Mr. Darcy & My mom's dementia

 Not Quite Mr. Darcy is dedicated to the memory of my mom. It hits close to home for me because the main character is a live-in nurse for an elderly woman with dementia. My mom had Alzheimer's for 14 1/2 years before she died. Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia are difficult for the individual with it as well as their family and friends. In my book I tried to capture some of the ways it affects the lives of everyone who surrounds the patient, though each individual's path through dementia is different.

    The most notable thing for my mom as she passed through the different phases was the kindness she continued to show to others. Even as her vocabulary dwindled, she tried to encourage others around her. And when words finally failed her, she would just smile. 

     I hope that regardless of what disease or situation brings my life on earth to a close, I will be remembered for showing kindness to others. I always knew my mom's kindness and smiles emanated from her love of Jesus. That is my greatest desire too. 

Another thing she was known for was her love of butterflies. She wore butterfly brooches and had butterflies throughout my parents' home and her own office. She said they reminded her of the new life we have in Christ. 

    I'm thankful for the testimony that my mom lived through her words and deads to point me to Christ, and am honored to have written a character that I think represents both her faith and her disease so well.

    I would love for you to read Not Quite Mr. Darcy, not just to experience the precious character of Margaret, but also to see the main character, Kate, learn from her and others that even when our whole world seems to be collapsing around us, there is hope in Christ!

1 Corinthians 13:12-13 ESV - 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Bringing Christ to Christmas Gift Giving

What better way to put Christ back into Christmas than to give Christ centered gifts! When our first child had his first Christmas we decided to give only 3 gifts as a reminder that Jesus received 3 gifts from the wisemen. Each gift had a category: want, need, and spiritual. As the children have gotten older and are adults, the want and need often overlap.  There have been so many benefits from this. Limiting the gifts has been great at keeping the focus more on Christ. Rather than spending this season figuring out what they want, our children's focus has been freed up for other things. They are actually often at a loss, because gifts for themselves are not their top priority. Review of The Designated Valentine by Drew Taylor

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ In The Designated Valentine Drew Taylor weaves past and present together to gradually reveal how Karoline and Mason went from long time best friends to enemies to love. This is a sweet, clean romantic comedy that doesn’t overdo the comedy and only contains kissing, though it does discuss the battle with attraction the main characters have and how they want to be careful because of their faith. Drew includes a warning at the beginning of the book that there is also some mention of alcohol as this book deals with a past addiction. Drinking is not promoted. Both Karoline and Mason think they’ve matured since they last spoke three years before, but they still have room to grow and as a reader I enjoyed my front row seat to see that growth.
